IUDan93
You know, age doesn't matter as much as some are trying to make out. Many kids lean on grandparents all the time and appreciate their wisdom. Also, if we are worried that he can't coach for 20 years, but maybe for only another 10-12, well that will mean that he has been successful, because CAM only got 4 years and Crean 9. I hope he does well enough to get an extension, because being young and having the potential for 20-25 years as coach didn't work out for Archie. We need a coach that does well for the next 3-4 years, and than go from there.
dbmhoosier
I'll say that when it comes to guarding the GOAT Woodson was apparently no Dan Dakich.

The best one who is a D1 recruit said, "Coach, I would be lucky to name 10 current head coaches in the NBA." So, I'm not saying this as a knock on Woodson as they also wouldn't be able to tell me who the coach for Arkansas or Alabama is. I'm just saying I disagree that recruits are going to know who Woodson is unless they grew up in Indiana and their parents were big fans. Actually maybe their grandparents. I'm 47 and don't remember Woodson. Did you see during the big East tournament where a security guard did not know who Patrick Ewing was. He was coming into Madison Square Garden where he played in the NBA but didn't have his credentials and the security guard did not know him. Parakeet Jones
I would love for TJD to say he is staying to help Woody (I refuse to use CMW) get off to a good start and that he is going to switch his number again, this time to 42 to honor Coach.

DireBump
I’ve seen a lot of talk on here that kids these days won’t know who Mike Woodson is and how that will hurt recruiting. I laugh at this because who was Archie Miller? I had to google him after we hired him because I had no clue who it was. I couldn’t tell you what team he coached or where he played ball. For reference I’m in my early 20s. I remember mike Woodson as an NBA coach but not as a player for IU. The point I’m trying to make is who cares if they remember the coach or not. Kids can be recruiting to IU regardless of if they remember the head coach as a player. Archie brought in multiple 5 star recruits and he was a mid major coach and.... *checking google*.....played PG for NC State. It takes one google search to figure this stuff out.

Parakeet Jones
Sorry if this has been posted already and sorry that my ability to embed this stinks, but at 7:30 on the Indiana Basketball Facebook page there is going to be an interview with Woody conducted by Don Fischer.

That’s mesmerizing. I love the IU fan base. For anyone who’s become self loathing about IU basketball, that shows you who we can be. PS I assume the Fire Marshall looked the other way, lol. The number of random, unaccounted humans sitting Indian style in random spots or standing around is mind boggling. I will defend this fan base to death. By the way, those were two stacked teams. 2

I know, I know, I hung on to that dream too long. I processed it during a drive on I-69, and then the more I thought about it, the more I was like, "Heck, yeah! Mike Woodson!" My basketball knowledge is limited to watching games, Don Fischer, instruction from Coach Knight on his shows, all of you talking about the plays, etc., so I'm not a great person to ask if he'll succeed. So he hasn't coached in college, but he has in the NBA, with many different players and personalities and media; well-liked by any and all who know him, from what I can tell; terrific player back in the day; Thad Matta is a major addition - honestly goosebumps that he's in the cream and crimson now - because something that Butler was doing at that time and at least 2-3 coaches later was RIGHT and why not bring that here; and WOW THE ROLODEX. Larry Brown?? WOW WOW WOW. The guy is a basketball genius, and I loved him when he coached the Pacers. I have big hopes, and I think this is going to turn out to be a great hire. I am ALL IN! Let's go, Hoosiers!! The guys on the assembly call seem pretty down on it. Except for that guy with the cigar and he looked pretty hammered, honestly.

Jerrod Morris had written an article about Woodson before the hire about the 5 good things he would bring to IU.

Popular Post BGleas
Been really busy so haven't posted since the weekend. That also gave me a chance to digest this a bit more after the initial disappointment. I still think this is a really risky move, and could potentially do more long term damage to the program if it doesn't work. I'm also still disappointed that after Stevens, IU didn't go big game hunting in the college ranks (Beard, Musselman, Drew, Oats, etc.), as I felt the move here was to get a coach with proven Power 5 experience. Think a Kelvin Sampson move but finally getting it right with a cleaner version. With that said and more time to hear Woodson speak, etc., I am more optimistic than I was before. I still think this is either a massive mistake or a genius move with little in between, but I do have a little more hope that it's genius, and here's why. I'm hoping this wasn't just a "we need an IU guy" move to bring in an old player and Woodson is the best they could find. What I am hoping is that this was actually a strategic decision by Dolson to be at the forefront of a shift in college basketball. I'm hoping this was a strategic decision with the NIL coming to be ahead of the curve and turn IU basketball into almost an NBA training ground. To be a program that is player friendly and that the top players want to be. I don't mean a one and done factory, I just mean to build the program as almost an NBA training ground. When you come to IU you have a head coach that ties the tradition of IU with the forward thinking ways of the NBA in terms of style of play, taking care of players, off the court preparation, etc. As consultants you have one of the best college basketball coaches of the last 15 years in Matta and potentially you have one of the top coaches in all of basketball in the last 30-40 years in Larry Brown. As some have said, almost like the Alabama of college basketball with Saban surrounding the program with former head coaches, etc. Right there you have three guys that are highly successful in the game of basketball at all levels and have been there and done that. Then you add things like the Cuban Center for Sports Media, hopefully a fantastic, forward thinking group of assistants, and this could be a genius move. My hope is that this was strategic beyond just "let's get an IU guy". I don't mean that as a negative necessarily, I'm just hoping there is potentially an even larger strategic plan in play here.
