Starting a new thread.  Memorable nuggets that happened each day in baseball history.

July 6th, 1933 - The first All-Star game was played at Comiskey Park in Chicago.  Babe Ruth's 2-run homer is the difference in the AL's 4-2 victory.

July 8th, 1951 - In the midst of a personal feud between the two, Yankees manager Casey Stengel removes center fielder Joe DiMaggio from the game before a pitch is thrown in the top of the 2nd inning, but after DiMaggio had already taken the field.

July 9th, 1946 - Ted Williams hits two home runs, two singles, walks, and scores 4 runs as the AL beat the NL 12-0 at the All-Star Game, which was played at Fenway Park that season.

And just think…he lost three years during WWII when he was 24, 25, 26.  DiMaggio and others as well.  And I forgot that he flew 39 missions during the Korean War!

On July 12 in Baseball History...
  • 1901 - Cy Young of the Boston Red Sox records his 300th victory with a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia A's.

     

  • 1945 - Tommy Holmes of the Boston Braves went hitless to end his consecutive-game hitting streak at 37 games, a National League record that stood until Pete Rose broke it in 1978.

     

  • 1949 - Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians and Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe of the host Dodgers became the first black players to appear in an All-Star game. The American League took advantage of five National League errors to win 11-7 at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.

  • 1951 - Allie Reynolds of the New York Yankees beat Bob Feller of the Indians 1-0 with a no-hitter at Cleveland. Gene Woodling homered for the Yanks.

     

  • 1955 - Stan Musial hit Frank Sullivan's first pitch of the 12th inning for a home run to give the National League a 6-5 victory in the All-Star game at County Stadium in Milwaukee.

     

  • 1979 - Thousands of fans overran the Comiskey Park field during Disco Demolition Night, causing the Chicago White Sox to forfeit the second game of a doubleheader.

     

  • 1990 - Melido Perez pitched the record-tying seventh no-hitter of the season as the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees 8-0.

     

  • 1994 - Tony Gwynn scored on Moises Alou's double in the tenth inning to give the National League an 8-7 victory and end its record six-game losing streak in the All-Star Game. Fred McGriff, the MVP, hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

     

  • 1997 - Francisco Cordova and Ricardo Rincon combined for a ten-inning no-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Houston Astros 3-0. Cordova pitched nine innings before being removed with the score 0-0. Rincon pitched the tenth and got the win when Mark Smith hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning.
