I have confidence in Jackson with solid coaching and offensive philosophy. He will be a good player. He shouldn't be judged on last year. Just pointing out that winning QB play requires a lot of intangibles and fundamentals from reading defenses, assessing pre snap movements, executing on a consistent basis, having toughness both mentally and taking a hit, etc. That’s just a lot to put on anyone who hasn’t shown enough in these respects. I do like this staff a lot. I’m just expressing a concern for what might prevent a bowl season. Certainly not trying to knock any individual and you acknowledged I wasn’t doing that. On paper, Coach Cignetti did a bang up job in the transfer portal, putting IU in a good spot to shot everyone what it’s made of. All due respect to Coach Allen for what he was trying to do at IU, but there was ZERO chance he could get Lucas to come visit IU , let alone twice! Things WILL be much different this season and much better….I just don’t know how much better until we can land a surprise “W” over a good team. It seems like forever since we've had any sort of presence in the trenches on the defensive side. Over the past several seasons the only way we won was when the other team abandoned what was successful offensively, semi over-coaching in regards to play calling ie running when they were getting whatever they wanted through the air and vice versa. I’m far more enthusiastic about IU football than basketball. Love both sports and am happy with the basketball portal but I just don’t find our program in basketball very pleasurable at the moment. I don’t see the point in being a negative fan. Cautious, fine, but negative - I’d just do something else. Getting to the point, I’m eating Cignetti up. He says he’s process oriented. I totally get it and love it. Here’s my optimism: 1. I think there’s an inefficiency in the marketplace of players that he’s capitalizing on. The media and other teams don’t buy into some of our transfers because of lack of respect of the talent level. I personally am the opposite view. Cignetti, to simplify, says he favors production over potential. He’s added a lot of players who may not wow you physically but they are sound, know how to do their job, are reliable, and produce. I think there are a core of guys who will surprise everyone on both sides of the ball. 2. I expect us to be good in close games and to stop beating ourselves. Forever, we’ve been the kings of critical mistakes. That kills you at IU because we aren’t going to overwhelm you with talent. I expect that to change. 3. I think we win 6 games minimum and it could be 8 if we stay healthy. The idea that we are the 84th best team in the country or whatever is not how I see it. The media and analytics guys can’t fathom that a host of JMU transfers can succeed at this level. Personally I think this will be an awakening writ large. Carpenter, Kamara, Fisher, Walker, the safety from ODU. Ponds! CJ West! Doss. Zach Horton. Personally, I think they will surprise at how sound and effective they will be. 4. We cherry picked a lot of the best talent from “a lower level” and married it with some guys with better pedigrees. McCulley. Carter Smith. Omar Cooper. Etc. It’s not like we have a lower level talent base. No, we took some of the better guys and added them with higher level guys. 5. I am expecting better player development. It goes back to being process oriented. 6 Our assistants are undoubtedly better and will make a huge difference. Haines is brilliant and will hopefully find a way to generate pressure in a way we aren’t used to. Very good S and C. Top position coaches. This is going to be huge. Do I have concerns? Sure. I’d like more depth across the board especially at some key positions. Could I be wrong about how some of the guys translate? Yes. But I firmly believe in the approach. If anything, I’m worried that other schools will see how effective it is and it might get harder to do in subsequent years. If anything, I would like to see the basketball program do it too. In any event, whereas the basketball program feels tedious to follow, football is far more fun. Maybe I will be wrong but I like the approach and I think the marketplace is misjudging our roster based on fallacies in their respective systems.
