No, wrong class. We chose JHS, the guy you praised earlier, over Smith.

Good call. Could we not have still recruited Smith and JHS? The fact we prioritized bringing back XJ imo cost us. Guards stayed away because we gave him the keys to the car.

I’m so over this one. He’s good but not a one and done like UConn is selling.

Most of UConn guys aren’t one and done…it’s why they’ve been so good…guys coming back. I don’t think he believes he will be one and done either. He just knows he is going to play an offense tailored to his skill set and win a lot of games.

Mike Woodson was hired end of March in 2021. Smith committed to Purdue less than a month later and well before JHS committed. I don't fault the staff for trying to re-recruit their own roster (TJD, Race, etc) and hitting the portal within the first month over prioritizing a low level PG that didn't hold a single P5 offer....I say that even in hindsight.

Hindsight is 20/20.

I do not recall a single person on this board that wanted Smith other than @btownqb

8 months ago Everyone wanted to prioritize Sisley over Mullins because Sisley was the projected 5 star and Mullins was a 3. Then we say that that was wrong.

The difference here is the Monday morning QB's get to change their mind after everything is said and done even 3 years later.

Any complaints about not getting Smith should be sent to Archie Miller.

Me too, like to have him, but we’ll survive. Things have changed and until we start winning big, we can’t take it for granted that top in-state talent will want to stay home and play for Hoosiers, so on to the portal, plus Rice and Carlyle could be back next year.

I wanted Smith (live in Westfield and went to see him play after hearing he had unofficial visit or watched IU game w/ Archie) and I know @Billingsley99 wanted him too. Didn't feel like we were alone or only 3 of us. I was really bummed when Turdue got him, but realize/believe that if he chose IU he wouldn't have had remotely the same level of success he's had there.

I wanted Smith at IU

Yes, that was a bit of an embellishment. I just remember that there were conversations about getting someone "better". He wasn't athletic enough, he didnt have enough stars, etc.

If we lose out on Mullins I hope Rice and Carlyle come back next year. If they do we still be solid in the back court. If Newton can get healthy and stay healthy then we will be even better. I think by next year Cupps will be a solid piece of the rotation. On the wings if Tucker comes back and Goode gets a 5th year we will he good there as well.

Goode is not getting his 5th year so i wouldn’t hold out hope for that

This has been soooooo drawn out and is completely exhausting. I'm honestly more excited about portal player additions than I am about incoming freshmen.

I would love to land these true freshmen but there are no guarantees of the impact they can bring from HS to college. I mean, look what Coach Woodson and Co. did with the portal in the offseason .....

Bryson Tucker - only true freshman

Myles Rice - r/s -soph.

Kanaan Carlyle - soph.

Luke Goode - senior

Oumar Ballo - r/s senior +

and also, 4 other transfers to help add some practice and positional depth/backups.....

Now, if this incredible group produces like he's envisioned, then we will have something really special this year. Just win.

All of these recruits talk about Mike Woodson being honest. And I believe he is. What could be happening here is that Hurley is telling him what he wants to hear and Woodson told him what he needed to hear. Hurley doesn't seem like a stand up guy to me. He's just another shady ass New Jersey native.

I've heard the exact opposite so I'd be curious if you know something. Other players played more games and were awarded an extra year.

We have seen so many athletes getting a 6th and 7th year so Goode should be able to get a 5th year. If you only played 10 games and it shouldn't make a difference if it is the first 10 or the last 10.

Maybe that's a difference between HS and portal recruiting. HS kids are sold dreams and love hearing it. Portal guys experienced the overpromising and want the reality.

Let’s not pretend that this isn’t a huge miss / disappointment.

Disappointing? Sure only because of the time and effort the staff put in. Huge miss? Hardly. I’d take a backcourt of 22-23 year old Carlyle and Rice over a 19 year old Mullins and Haralson. If Mullins is still in college after 2 years, Hurley’s 10 month plan for him had to have gone horribly wrong.
